Mahoney was a staff photographer the Rocky Mountain News in Denver for ten years where he was part of the photo team that twice won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography.
Recently, he spent six years helping build an investigative journalism start-up that later merged with the PBS affiliate in Denver where he continued to shoot, edit and produce short documentaries on public policy topics
Currently, he shoots still images and video for a variety of editorial and commercial clients including The Associated Press, Getty Images, the Colorado Trust, CoBank, AimCo, Pearl iZUMi and others.
The 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography was awarded to the photo team at the News for coverage of the Columbine High School shooting. Again the team won a Pulitzer for their coverages of the wildfires that devastated Colorado in 2002. Mahoney was an assistant producer and videographer for the short film "Final Edition" that won a 2010 regional EMMY for Topical Documentary.
He began his career with the Associated Press and spent nine years there.
